One of the reasons that I love vintage is the quality. An average vintage dress from the 1950s is head and shoulders above any modern department store frock in design, construction and fabrics used. On the rare occasions that I venture into a mall or department store, I'm always horrified when I see the quality of the products.

Chinese cashmere is crap. Notice how it is starting to pill, while still on the display table! Don't buy it, it won't last the season, much less onto next. In the past decade the Chinese have managed to make sweaters out of the cashmere that used to be thrown away, and the quality of the fiber shows. I pass them up at thrift stores when they're marked $2. In my opinion they're still overpriced. I have fabulous vintage cashmere sweaters from 50+ years ago that I pull out winter after winters, thicker, fluffier and built to last like a Sherman tank. Shop for vintage pieces at local stores or online. Dalton and Pringle are fabulous makers, add "Scotland" to your search. You'll be amazed what you can pick up for a fraction of modern prices, and be on cloud 9 when you put it on and experience what cashmere should feel like.

Women have breasts, it is one of our defining characteristics. After having my son, mine have grown to fabulous proportions and I love them. I wish fashion did. Somewhere along the line stretchy fabrics have replaced darts and gathering. I can't tell you the amount of dresses that I've seen in sizes 10 and up that could only accommodate a modest A cup at best. All summer I watched girls with fabulous figures stroll by in sundresses with tank tops underneath. Its not a fashion statement, its a necessity. I like the bodice of my dress to cover more than the average pasty.

Even vintage reproductions can be just as bad. I recently picked up a modern vintage reproduction dress from a business whose initials are QOH. Original tags still attached and in a desirable size. I figured it would be an easy sell on my ebay store. Then I started to look at it. The satin fabric is bottom of the barrel, though the size is far into the "Plus" rage, there is no room to accommodate breasts, there isn't a hem, simply an overcast stitch, and worst of all.... The fabric wasn't cut on the grain. You girls who so know what I mean, especially when dealing with satin. The pieces of the bodice were cut out to economize on fabric, making the finished piece an odd mish-mash of shiny and dull. Frankly, I'm embarrassed to list it, so it sits in storage, with its $100+ price tag still attached.

While reading a pattern catalog I stumbled across the above drawing, used in an ad in 1942 that seemed to sum up my thoughts. If you don't start with quality (patterns, materials, construction methods), you're not going to get quality. It made me mentally examine my own wardrobe, what has lasted me the longest and what I buy simply to get by. I can't think of a modern produced item that I have purchased in the last 2 years that is still going strong in my wardrobe, yet its easy to pick out a vintage piece that has been in regular rotation for 10+ years.

Obviously, there is good and bad in everything, but the good is just so darn hard to find. I'm sticking to what I know....Vintage is worth the price, I'm off to buy more now.....

I DARE you not to shake your rear while listening to The Showmen sing "It Will Stand". It just isn't possible.

Also, I can't get over how fabulous it is that the singer's voice cracks in the very first "You take some music". That would never be allowed in today's world of auto tune and fancy producing. It makes this song even better.

I know the pics kind of suck but I was hoping to show how the skirt was designed to expand. I believe the two V shaped cut outs were meant to be worn in back.

Tuesday I purchased this awesome Chicago Blackhawks hat off etsy from seller Cool Crochet and it arrived yesterday.

I couldn't be happier! Lets just hope it will bring the team some luck this weekend. I'm going to wear it to the game on Sunday. I won't even dare to type what I hope will happen that night.

Like something is brewing, about to begin.

So much has been going on lately, not all of it I'm ready to spill the beans about. Its not far from 10pm on a Sunday night and I'm posting this from my garden where I just finished planting flowers. Most of my best gardening gets done after dark.

Off to give myself a serious scrub down. I'm covered in dirt and compost.

This next week is going to be crazy busy and crazy awesome. I can't wait!

40's Shoe Stash...or....Why I Can't Breathe Right

Erin and I went digging at an estate sale yesterday and came home with some treasures. Among them, some beautiful 1940's shoes that had been hidden away in a drawer for 60 or so years. I'm absolutely fascinated by the style and the shapes. What I would do to have these in my size (they are all 6 1/2)

The owner was definitely a woman after my own heart. Besides saving what seemed to be every piece of clothing she had ever owned, we share a bad habit. When switching purses she simply grabbed what she needed out of it at that exact moment and left the rest. Just like I do. Its odd to be going through someone else's purses full receipts and kleenex when I have enough of my own at home.

Also, I inhaled so much "age" in the apartment that I'm still not breathing quite right. I'm convinced that what I need is a bit of medicinal tequila, perhaps with some salt and lime. :) Maybe after the kid goes to bed.

No matter how hard I try, I can't seem to pick a favorite, they all are so darling.

DuSable Museum - Black Panther Exhibit.

Today, William, Erin and my sister, Jeni, went to the DuSable Museum to see the Black Panther Exhibit. The combination of vintage clothing and Chicago History made it a must do. Above, William contemplates Cherrios in the shadow of Fred Hampton's jacket.

I loved seeing my silhouette reflecting in the poster that William is looking at. On the right is a picture Erin took of William and I walking past Fred Hampton's door.

William didn't have the patience to read and admire every artifact so we went and played in the park while Jen and Erin looked around the rest of the museum, including the Bronzeville exhibit which had tons of music memorabilia. As much as I wanted to examine everything, the kid would rather spend his time climbing through the crotch of a tree and watching a digger dig and a dumper dump across the street.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that shops on Gilt occasionally. This weekend they were having a "sale" on Threadless shirts. Gilt had the original price listed as $54, and marked down to $24. As some of you might know, Threadless shirts retail for $18, and you can regularly buy them through their site directly for $10, sometimes even $5.

WHAT A FREAKIN SCAM!

By chance, my friend John was in there today and asked if there was a difference in the shirts that were being sold (like higher quality or something) NOPE. Same thing. They said that the difference in the price IS WHAT GILT CHARGES.

Goodness knows what else they are inflating the retail price on!!

The time capsule that is Mom's closet - pt. 3 - 1950s

Here's the third in a series of posts about my clothing I found at my Mom's house.

This beautiful 1950's dress is made of the heaviest satin I have ever seen and is lined in a stiff pelon. This is probably the frock that really made me realize what 1950's clothing can do for a girl's figure. I felt like a queen in this dress.

This dress was a Valentine's Day present from my boyfriend in 1993. (I wonder if he has a google alert set up for his name? Let's try it, Jim Ekberg.) I'm not sure how I had the balls to ask that a dress be purchased for me, especially one that cost the princely sum of $30. Maybe I had been watching too many old movies where sending a dress over to your date was the norm or something. We both worked at the same place for a meager $4.35/hour. I hope I was at least a vaguely good girlfriend to get such a generous present.

Now that I'm really thinking about it I DID spend February 14th, 1993 seeing Screeching Weasel play at McGregors. So I guess I couldn't have been too awful.

I only vaguely remember wearing this dress once to the theater with my mom. With a boyfriend who took his girlfriend to a punk show on VD, I guess that isn't that surprising.

Looking at this dress today I'm amazed at the quality and absolutely shocked and disappointed that it doesn't have a label.

I'm having a ball writing about these old dresses, I think I might need to go take pictures with an actual camera.

The time capsule that is Mom's closet - pt. 2 - 1930s

Here's the second in a series of posts about clothing I found at my mom's house.

I wore this vintage 1930's house dress a lot in high school. It has the sweetest puffed sleeves, a ruffled collar, functional buttons down the front and a waist cinching sash. It is truly magic. One of the most flattering dresses I have ever owned. I know it doesn't look like a lot here, or in person from that matter, but on the body it just does everything right.

I bought it at a Salvation Army in Chicago that I loved at the time (long gone now). I remember I used to love it because it was dirt cheap and full of vintage. I used to leave with garbage bags full of clothing for $20.

From the moment I bought it, it was on its way out. The fabric was deteriorating and would rip every time I wore it, but I really didn't care. I'd just keep some safety pins in my bag and stitch it up when I got home.

The most memorable place I ever wore it was in 92 or 93 to a video shoot for the band Tub Ring , in some odd space by North Park Mall in the Chicago suburbs. I remember spending a good part of the evening being talked up to some guy whose necklace I liked. It was a Fimo clay and crystal monstrosity. He liked me, I liked the necklace. I left with the necklace and I never saw him again. I felt bad afterwards, and I still kinda do. Man did I behave like a little snot.

The time capsule that is Mom's closet - pt. 1 - 1920s

Yesterday I was alone at my mom and dad's house with 45 minutes to kill. They only have broadcast tv, my cell phone was low on juice, and mom only subscribes to crappy magazines. So I started going through the closet in my old room.

What a trip down memory lane! Compared to when I lived there, there is very little of my stuff left, but what was there was a timeline of my fashion history and my love of vintage. Sorry the pics are crappy, all I had was my camera phone, but you'll get the idea.

Above are 2 1920's dresses. The green one on the right was purchased first, in about 1993-4. There was a booth in an antique mall in St. Charles that I was infatuated with for years. I used to go and talk to the owner for hours on end. She was a wealth of knowledge but a bit odd. She scarred me for life as far as picking for dealers. I remember bringing in a pair of deadstock white 1960's gogo boots hoping to make a little money. I was a shy college girl, she was a professional. I was hoping for $10-15 she offered me $5...or so I thought.... I've never been the kind of girl that drives a hard bargain. I agreed. She opened up the cash register and she handed me a nickel. She was serious. I was creeped out. I never went there again.

The black velvet dress on the right I bought in about 1994-5. I found it at a thrift in Chicago hidden under a bunch of nightgowns. That day I learned an important lesson about thrifting: ALWAYS LOOK THROUGH THE NIGHTGOWNS. Every 1920s dress I have ever found has been in there, and a lot of other treasures too. Usually under the ugliest robe.

I wore both of these items out quite a few times, but I never really found them terribly flattering. I LOVED the idea of wearing real 1920's flapper clothes, but that fact was lost on everyone else. Besides that I've always wanted a REAL 1920's cloche. I've never owned one. To this day I still want one.

FINALLY - Blackberry Farm!

The countdown is finally over, Blackberry Farm is open for business.

Located way the heck west of Chicago in Aurora, IL its a darling little living history park that features a carousel, historic buildings, pony rides, farm, and more antique and vintage farm equipment that you can handle. Best of all, it has train and wagon rides!

The kid and I had a ball riding the train and wagon circuit for the better part of the afternoon. Just before I left I was able to placate him with the player piano in the "saloon" part of the Early Streets museum so I could take a quick look around the other displays. For those of you who are familiar with "Yesterday's Main Street" at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, this little park's display it puts it to shame!

I was sad that the ponies weren't open for business today, but the kid had enough to do anyway. Where else are you going to get all of this plus UNLIMITED pony rides for 6 bucks.

Its a definite "must do" if you're in the area and worth the drive if you're not!

Yesterday Erin and I met up at the vintage sale at Heaven Gallery. We had a great time looking at all the wonderful items for sale and I even picked up the cutest little 1950's Anne Fogarty dress for a song!

Lo and behold this morning I found my picture on the Chicago Looks blog! Since I read all the time it made me pretty darn happy. Although if I thought I might be getting my picture taken, I might have combed my hair once I got of my bike or worn something a bit fancier!

Hey Vintage Sellers - Let's see the label!

Dear Fellow Sellers,

I'm not one to tell anyone how to run their business but this issue really gets to me, and stops me from buying. I HAVE to see the label. No description of the label is a suitable substitute for a quick snapshot. It really helps tell the story of the item and speaks volumes as to the age of the item. C'mon ladies, just by looking at the labels above you can guess era of the item!

I understand that on etsy, sellers are limited to 5 pictures but in my opinion one should be the label. Heck, if there were 2 pictures allowed I'd want the full front shot and the label.

Wild West Adventure With My Good Luck Horseshoe

Yesterday we got the heck out of the city and headed to the far west burbs.

We hit the DuPage Children's Museum for some crazy run around fun. So darn crazy that this pic is the absolute best one I took, out of 50. The kid just doesn't like to look at the camera or stand still for more than a nano second. To get this one I had to go behind the air sucking tube he was playing with, say a couple 'Hail Marys' and cross my fingers.

He exhausted himself to the point that he asked to go to the car. Nice.

From there we made a super fast trip into the mall. I've had a $15 Disney Store gift card in my wallet since who knows when and I know if I don't use it I'll loose it. I meant to use it for cocktails on my cruise, but I totally forgot. So we headed into the store and the kid was over the moon. He's obsessed with 'Toy Story' and with the movie coming out soon the store was stuffed with merch. He picked out a large, plastic, noise making Buzz. After the card was used it cost me $10. A small price to pay for what followed...........Shopping at THREE STORES with a happy kid.

I found some really cute dresses. A few 50's does 80's sundresses and some true 50's pieces too, including a great purple floral print sheath dress with sequins and some shortie shorts. Not to mention an amazing 1940's wedding dress with a 30-something inch waist. HOT STUFF!

Until a couple weeks ago I avoided taking the kid shopping. Now I'm realizing that he's my little good luck charm. If all it takes is an unbelievably annoying toy every few weeks, I think I'll pay the fee.

Spring in Chicago!

Spring has finally arrived here in Chicago and I couldn't be happier about it. The kid and I have been spending our mornings in the back yards. He plays with the hose while I swig coffee in a futile attempt to start my brain.

All the tulips are new to our yard. They were haphazardly planted last fall, in the dark, while I drank beer. I think they came out pretty nice. Its so hard to find time during daylight hours to accomplish such a task. My neighbors must think I'm insane.

I'd rather be doing whatever the heck she's doing....

Today I feel overwhelmed, too much to do. Things to list, things to clean, things to organize, the kid is whiney as all hell and only stops crying if he's in my arms or if "Toy Story" is on. I do not want to raise a tv zombie. The pay pal well is dry and needs to be replenished. I need dough, I need to be a good mother. I feel like I'm doing everything half assed. Probably because I am.

I've been in fashion frumpy mode since I don't know when. I've noticed that the worse I dress, the worse I eat. Its a vicious cycle.

I have a thousand things to do and would rather be doing whatever this woman is doing. Check out that coat, the fur cuffs are STRIPED!

VINTAGE NudeeDudee - One of my favorite girls!

Time has been flying! One of the most exciting things I have done lately was visiting with my dear old friend, Kim, who was visiting from Los Angeles.

She's one of those girls who you almost want to hate because she's just so damn good at everything, but she's way too fun. Met Kim when I was about 20, when we were both neck deep in vintage Italian scooters. Her with a Lambretta, me with my little pink Vespa.

The two pictures on the left were from my birthday party circa 2000 (hence, the tiara). Check out Kim's scooter club Jacket. I can't quite make out the sleeve on the shoulder but I believe one on the chest is a Lambretta patch and the back patch was definitely our "Screaming Mimi's" Girls Scooter Club patch.

Kim has been a crazy-obsessive sewer for as long as I've known her. I was lucky enough to get some of her designs pretty early, the above right picture is me in one of her creations circa 2002 (for my bachelorette party).

In recent years she has parlayed that love into a little business she calls NudeeDudee on etsy. She specializes in vintage reproductions with lots of 1930s and 1940s style fashions. When Girl Scouts Go Bad - It could happen to you!

Continuing on with the Girl Scout theme for today....

I recently received an email from an ebay customer interested the dress shown below. I had a great time exchanging emails. She told me how much she wants an old uniform to run around in and I enjoyed telling her of my adventures of a trashy vintage Girl Scout. It inspired me to dig through the basement for the above picture. The identity of my partner in crime is omitted to protect the gainfully employed.

It was The Las Vegas Grind in 1999 (For those not familiar, I believe it was put on by the same people that do Viva Las Vegas, but it was focused on Garage Rock). The event took place over Halloween weekend and the 31st was Sunday. We had a blast, but by the end of the night there was one little problem, my friend had booked our flights and we were on the red-eye leaving around midnight or so with a layover in St. Louis.

Now here's the part that REALLY dates the story.

Somehow we were able to get ourselves to the airport despite our unbelievably inebriated state. Somewhere along the way I had lost the cap to the large bottle of Southern Comfort I was drinking but that didn't stop me from getting through security and boarding the plane.

Let me tell you, being drunk, dressed as a Girl Scout in Las Vegas on Halloween is ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS.

What isn't funny is waking up in St. Louis on November 1st, reeking of booze, in a bizarre costume with smeared off makeup and having to board a commuter flight to Chicago.

Good Times.

A trip down Viva Las Vegas Memory Lane! Just don't do the math!

While looking for some thread I found this little ID in my sewing box. My ID card from Viva Las Vegas 2. Even a remedial math student like me can do the math and I shutter to think about how long ago this was. You submitted your own picture for the card and this was a self portrait that I took in my very first apartment.

In my head, I still look exactly like this.

My memories of the VLV shows are pretty fuzzy, could've had something to to with the booze, or the boys, or the fact that it was so long ago. The only thing I remember clearly is that the Cleftones were jaw-droppingly fantastic.

One thing I can't figure out is how girls do it now with all the airline bag charges. I'm confident I brought 2 50lb+ suitcases - and was probably convinced that I forgot things. Do they ship things ahead? Pay the crazy extra bag fees? I can't imagine they really bring less!

The reason no one asks me to DJ anymore.

In case you haven't noticed I just added a playlist to this blog. It started out being just a couple of songs, but quickly swelled as I kept thinking of songs that I haven't heard in a while.

They're in no particular order and have pretty much nothing to do with each other. The only thing that ties them together is that they were all songs I wanted to hear today.

Stunning and Practical - The Perfect Winter Coat

Sadly, it is that time of year again. For us girls in the cold north, practicality starts to trump fashion. It seems like every girls wardrobe changes from the cutest bright colored little sundresses to lumpy layers of brown, black and gray.

It really hit me a few years ago at Midway Airport. It was February and I had just returned from a lovely trip to Southern California. In a few short hours I went from trees with green leaves, flowers blooming and exuberant California clothing to the drab sea of wool that is Chicago in the winter. It truly is amazing how little color you see on the streets in the coldest months. Heck, a light brown coat sticks out like a traffic cone.

Which brings me to why you need a brightly colored winter coat. Life is too short to spend 4 months blending into the asphalt.

The coat shown above is a real cutie. For one thing it is completely reversible! One side is a black and white checked tweed, and the other is a bright cherry red mohair. Quintessential 1950's styling, over sized buttons and 3/4 length sleeves.

And just think, if you accidentally brush the side of a car and end up covered in salt residue, you can just flip it inside out!

Driving for Obama! But lagging behind....

So yesterday I spent 12 hours volunteering for Obama's visit to Chicago. A job which I decided couldn't possibly be done without pantyhose and pearls (which I forgot to put on). I was assigned to drive for the motorcade (WTF?!?! Me?!!?) and I spent the morning driving out to the airport with the other volunteers and picking up a fleet of white rental vans. When it came time to hear are assignments I found that me answering "I Do" to the question of "Do you know your way around the city?" meant that I was assigned to the Straggler car. The Straggler stays behind at each stop for an additional 15-20 minutes just in case someone missed the motorcade. Although an important position (so I told myself) that meant that I was to miss everything exciting for the entire day. While others got to go onto the tarmac and watch Air Force One land....I lagged behind. Driving 60mph on the shoulder past bumper to bumper traffic....lagged behind. Everyone one else getting THEIR PICTURE TAKEN WITH THE PRESIDENT....I was circling outside.

I kept reminding myself that I was there to work and do whatever was needed and I felt I completed my job successfully. Meeting Barack would have been the gravy for the day, I had plain ol' potatoes!

All the sitting and circling still had a bit more excitement than my average day listing on ebay and I would do it again anytime. I have 7 more years to have the chance!

I'm in the process of packing up the kid for a day of retail shopping. Yes, there are some things I don't buy vintage.

On the top of the list is a pair of pantyhose. I can't even remember the last time I wore a pair of honest to goodness pantyhose. Tights, sure. Fishnets, absolutely. Stockings, occasionally.

I have big goings on tomorrow but I don't want to jinx anything yet. There is no question in my mind that such an occasion requires nude pantyhose. All will be revealed soon, but until then, keep your fingers crossed!

I love the idea, I love the fee structure, I love seeing kooky handmade items that I've never seen before, I even love the little "heart" thing.

What I cannot get over is searching. It is useless! I stop by every once in a while to try to unearth a fun treasure and I get sick of it almost immediately. Sure the little square pictures are cute, but the titles are all cut off and people seem to use the 3 most useless words for the first words of their their titles. The whole "tags" things makes sense in theory, but many sellers use tags that seem to have nothing to do with the item.

I know many see it as the future of selling vintage clothing, if it annoys me this much as a buyer, I can't deal with it as a seller.

As much as ebay has wrong with it, it is soooo much easier to shop for something specific.

Am I missing something? Please educate me!

The End of an Era - Saying Goodbye to the Lincoln

Sigh.....It truly is the end of an era. Our dear 1963 Lincoln Continental Convertible is now for sale. No matter how you look at it, a beautiful boat like this just isn't practical for a city family with a young child. Hell, the damn thing wasn't even built with seat belts, much less a LATCH system.

In this beautiful car we toured the most glamorous cities in this country: Milwaukee! Madison! Indianapolis! Kenosha! Villa Park! Hayti!

Back in 2000 when I first met Sean I found out that he was 30 years old and NEVER had a driver's license. Shocked, I asked him what car would make him get one. He quickly replied "The Kennedy Car". A couple of weeks later we drove by a parking lot with a 1963 Lincoln Continental with a For Sale sign. SOLD! We were young, in love and had a little money to burn! Although we're not quite as young now and the money bush in the yard has shriveled up and died, thankfully the love is still strong.

While cleaning it out I came across a fortune cookie fortune that read "Romance and travel go together now". I love my husband more today than when we were married, but I will admit that an old Lincoln is much more romantic than a late 90's Mercury and as far as "travel" goes, does running out to Walgreens count?

I can't believe it has been so long since I have posted. Time is flying by so quickly! I have been in a bit of a funk so I spent more time shopping than I have listing. Things are looking up though, the sun is shining, the bulbs are blooming, my office is almost organized and I just put a ton of 80's items up for auction on ebay under my id BombshellShocked. Lots of jumpsuits, dresses and rompers all starting at $19.99 or less.

For the first time EVER I got myself a model and I'm pretty darn happy with the way things are progressing. Sure the photos have something to be desired, but I'm learning with every shot. Hopefully, my hard work will pay off.

Chic Chicago - Vintage Fashion Exhibit

I have no idea why I put of visiting the Chicago History Museum to see the Chic Chicago exhibit. Yesterday I decided that I was long overdue. I packed the kid up, hopped on the bus and headed for Lincoln Park. The plan was to let the kid run wild at the zoo and then I would run to the History Museum to enjoy the exhibit at my leisure. Someone must have been watching over me because everything went smoothly. William ran around "Africa" until he started acting a bit tipsy. I loaded him into the stroller and headed for the nearest restroom to change his diaper, but he couldn't even stay awake long enough to get there. He was PASSED OUT! HOORAY!

I didn't waste a moment getting to the museum. I poked my head into the gift shop to see if I could afford the book before I got my heart set on it. On the bright side I could afford it, on the down side it was only available in paper back. I resisted the urge to peek and hopped on the elevator to the second floor.

From the moment I walked in I was in heaven! A 1948 Dior New Look Dress! THREE 1920's Chanel dresses! An incredible 1937 Schiaparelli Evening Ensemble beaded with a Jean Cocteau design! A Charles James "Butterfly" ball gown from 1954! A 1924 Lanvin Wedding gown! Just to name a few.

What really took my breath away was the 1913 Paul Poiret "Sorbet" evening gown. One of only 3 known to exist this one is the only one that follows the original sketch!

Is it odd to get teary eyed while looking at dresses?

To make the exhibit even more interesting than it already was the stories of the women who wore the gowns were included in the display. It was a great lesson in fashion and Chicago history.

William slept through my very slow perusal of the gowns and I even had time to go take a peek at a couple of the permanent exhibits.

When he finally did wake up I rewarded him with playtime on the el car and the train engine.

If you have the ability come to Chicago and see this exhibit! It was absolutely breathtaking!

My name is Nicole and I am addicted to sweaters. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I write that I probably have 60 in my dressers and closet right now. My two favorites are also the two newest. The first was purchased on ebay a couple of weeks ago. It was made by Dalton out of pink cashmere and has the fox fur collar dyed to match. PINK FOX FUR! Just thinking about it gets me slightly woozy. I have been searching for one for years and I still can't quite believe it is mine.

The second I picked up at a shop last week. It is navy blue with fruit beaded on it in white, red and lime green. I haven't quite decided what the fruit is. My first thought was grapes, but someone else guessed strawberries and now I'm almost thinking raspberries. Any way you slice it is more vibrant than any other beaded sweater that I have ever seen.

I love vintage swears. They look great over a fancy dress or a t-shirt and jeans. I'm always telling myself that I'll get rid of some, but it never really happens. Whenever I pick out a couple to sell, I end up realizing how much I like them and they go right back into the closet.

I just dropped one big chunk of change but I don't care! I'm going to see LORETTA LYNN. She's playing a benefit for The Old Town School of Folk Music and I just bought tickets!! I can't believe how small the venue is. According to the website no seat is more than 45 feet from the stage! One month from tomorrow I'll be applying my waterproof I makeup so I won't completely embarrass myself at the show. WHOOPEE!!!!

More Hockey Fashion

On Sunday we made a family trip down to the United Center to watch the Blackhawks get murdered by the worst team in hockey.

On the bright side, my best friend, Kati, was there with her DH and her darling daughter, Teagan. Since it was such a nice day, William "drove his car" (pictured here at Halloween dressed up as Burt Reynolds from Smokey and the Bandit) and because we walked to the stadium I was able to have a beer.....ok, a beer and a bit of whiskey...we were celebrating our Irish heritage and it tasted lovely. I really miss being able to have a drink whenever I want.

I wore a new (to me) 1950's black and white sundress with a full skirt, fitted bodice and shoulder ties (one of which had fallen into my cleavage). In my head I looked much cuter and in my defense I was holding 40 pounds of baby. The pic isn't so hot, but it just felt wonderful to be outside in a dress!

I listed quite a few dresses on ebay this week and here are three of my favorites. The first has been dubbed "Heroin Chic" due to its abstract poppy pattern and has a 30 inch waist. The second is a 2 piece skirt and top made from super shiny polished cotton and accented with metallic silver piping and has a 26 inch waist. The third has the most darling novelty print of a gypsy caravan with dancers and a 35 inch waist.

I look forward to the day, hopefully very soon, when I can wear similar dresses not accessorized with thick tights, wool sweaters and a heavy wool coat.

A couple of weekends ago I went to my first estate sale in years and SCORED on some vintage 1940's pants and 2 pairs of coveralls. I was practically shaking when I tried them on the next day, they fit perfectly!! Seriously, I felt like I re-bought my wardrobe from a previous life! Who knew there was another short, chunky girl out there with a waist!

Last Friday the weather was absolutely beautiful so I decided to dress up a bit for my errands. I threw on my denim coveralls, red white and blue heels & bakelite, wrapped a bandanna around my head and hopped on my 1942 Elgin bike. I felt great. I guess I'm not the only only one who thought I looked ok, I was practically chased down by a very handsome man in a pricy car who offered to take me out. Of course, I declined but it felt good to be noticed again.

I need to remind myself how much better I feel when I take a few extra minutes to get my self dresssed up. It is so hard in the winter when I really do NEED to wear my flannel lined jeans, but thankfully spring is on the way!

I have so much to do today, I went on a massive shopping spree last weekend and have some amazing items to list, lots of SUN DRESSES!

The only problem seems to be that I can't decide which style/color I want! Even with our weak dollar, they're still cheaper than most mall jeans and a billion times cuter. I can't wait to buy them!

Finding 1950's vintage boys clothes is pretty hard, but I have plenty of 1970's. I picked up this Heath Tex shirt last week, it reads "Little Cowboy".

I still can't seem to make heads or tails of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission's ban on the sale of used children's clothing. I can't imagine a world were I can't thrift shop for my little guy. I was hoping to add the kids vintage that I have been hoarding to my ebay shop but I am waiting to see how the cards fall.

Vintage Hockey Sweater for the Blackhawks Game

On Sunday the whole family went to the Blackhawks game. We have season tickets but thanks to jr.'s schedule we haven't made too many this year.

Having committed to dressing better I decided not to wear jeans and a jersey and instead put on a shirtwaist dress and a Mary Maxim knit hockey sweater. Unfortunately, the picture definitely isn't one of our best shots and you can't see the dress at all, but I thought I would share it here anyway.

I like vintage Mary Maxim graph knitting patterns but I LOVE it when I can find them already knit up. I believe this one was meant for a child since it is quite slim fitting, but that is what I like about it.

Sunday was a special occasion, one of Sean's favorite players of all time, Bob Probert, was signing autographs. He was a great goon and is ranked 4th overall for penalty minutes. Only one item could be signed per person, Sean brought his jersey, I brought William's Levi's jean jacket and I just grabbed a random jersey for myself. Just before it was our turn, a 20-something guy came up to the line and was trying to get the people in front of us to take his jersey to be autographed. They all refused because of the item limit, but I had the guts to ask "What's it worth to you?" Dreaming of Summer....

Chicago got hit with more snow last night, as I type and sip tea Sean is shoveling all the walkways.

Summer just can't come fast enough! Yesterday I spent time photographing vintage swimsuits. I hoped it would put me in a better mood, but I think it actually did the opposite. Auctiva has been acting strangely and until it improves I'll leave you with what just may be my favorite swimuit of all time, which I have listed on ebay. Made by Cole of California, it is absolutely dripping with fringe.

A Little Introduction

As a very wise woman once said (Laura from Project Runway to be exact), “It is a slippery slope to sweatpants and a mini-van.” Thankfully, I have not yet made it to the bottom of that slope, but I can see it clearly from my kitchen window.

So what does a girl do when, after years of priding herself on her minty vintage frocks & Lucite box purses finds herself in jeans with a diaper bag over one shoulder and baby in tow?
Hence the name, BombshellShocked. I believe it a fitting name for a formerly cute rockabilly girl who looked in the mirror one morning and couldn’t figure out what the hell happened to her fashion sense.

Although the era of the 1950’s glorified motherhood, it did not embrace breastfeeding and clothing was not based upon comfort. I am determined to combine the rockabilly style with ease of movement, breast accessibility, and the ability to get fully dressed within my toddler’s attention span. It isn’t easy, but isn’t impossible either.

Yes, ladies, I am determined to have it all!
